Handling A Lockout

Since you are not always in control of things that happen to you in your life, there is no reason to panic. However, there are a few things that you can control if you know what to do to avoid them, like locking yourself out of your home or vehicle. This is something that would annoy anyone. When someone contacts our locksmiths at Kent’s Lock Service in Leawood, KS, you would think that the situation was hopeless. It isn’t and that is why it helps to alleviate some anxiety by calling on a reliable locksmith that you can trust will be there when you need them.

A lockout situation can occur quickly and unexpectedly. This is why sometimes you’ll realize it before you know it. You are in control of what happens after you realize that you are locked out, such as contacting the right locksmith to help get you back inside. However, you may also want to know why this could happen and what steps you can take to prevent it from happening to you. We are hoping that you will revert to this article the next time this happens to you.

A lockout is something that usually occurs when you are in a hurry, the most unlikely time. They happen when you don’t really have time to deal with a situation like this. We hope that you’ll consider contacting us to let us help you out of this predicament but in the meantime, it’s at least worth mentioning exactly why this problem might occur.

Listed below are some of the many reasons why people surprisingly may find themselves lockout out of their home or vehicle and explains how to remedy the problem so that you do not find yourself locked out:

Even though there are so many different types of locks on the market today, there are some that most people are more familiar with than others. Despite having heard of these different types of locks and keys, you may not know much about them. Here is a list of some of the most widely known types of locks and keys and how they function.

Outdated and Old Keys – If you have an older key then chances are that you have to do all sorts of things to get it to align with the notches of the key to unlock it. If you’re finding yourself always maneuvering a key to fit the lock then this is certainly a problem that you shouldn’t ignore. You shouldn’t continue using the key because this can cause you to find yourself locked out when the key doesn’t align properly. Instead of putting yourself in this situation, why not do something now so that you don’t end up on the losing end of things. If you continue using the old key then it could even get stuck in the lock. Don’t wait for this to happen to you, do something now to ensure that it doesn’t.

When you have a key that does not properly fit into the lock, just don’t force it. This could result in your key breaking off in the lock. If you were rushing it would be very easy for you to simply react and snatch the key out of the lock. This would definitely result in your breaking the key off in the keyhole. Just stop to think about what it happening and don’t over-react. If you’re wiggling the key back and forth trying to get it to fit inside the key hold, this is a clear indication of a problem and you shouldn’t ignore it.

If you do happen to break the key off then it is possible to remove it. However, you shouldn’t try to do this, as you could make the problem worse. Simply contact one of our locksmiths to remove the key for you. Also, if you notice that you have an old key or a duplicate key (which may have been cut incorrectly) then just have the lock replaced. This will provide you with a new key and lock so that you don’t have to worry about the key getting stuck and finding yourself locked out.

Jammed Key Pins – On occasion, the lock pins jam. When this happens, you will not be able to turn the key. There is an easy way to fix this problem. You could just spray some silicone lubricant in the lock to help loosen the pins, which should enable you to turn the key. If this doesn’t help then you can just call up a locksmith who will be able to easily help you out. They may do the same exact thing that you have been advised to do but if it also doesn’t work for them, they may suggest that you change the lock. Most people don’t even realize that this is something that they should do every couple of years anyway.

Avoid A Lockout

You may not think that there is anything you can do to avoid being locked out but there is. Here are some things that our locksmiths suggest everyone does:

Have an Extra Key – As practical as this sounds it may surprise you to find out that not everyone has an extra key. While it may not prevent you from actually locking yourself out, it will enable you to get back in quickly. Make sure that you give the extra key to a close relative or friend who you can always rely on when you need it. You certainly wouldn’t want to give it to someone who travels a lot, as they may not be available to bring you the key when you need it.

Regular Lock Maintenance – You might think this is impractical but we assure you that it isn’t. We will access every single lock and lubricate those that require it and replace those that need to be replaced. Having your locks routinely maintained can help you avoid finding yourself locked out.
