Resolving Your Ignition Issues

If you are neglecting the maintenance of your vehicle it could start to present all sorts of problems. Ignition issues are one of these problems. If you have ever tried turning your key and the key won’t move, this could be due to an issue with your ignition. There may be a time when you are unable to get your key into the ignition. This is not uncommon. At Kent’s Lock Service in Leawood, KS, we help thousands of our customers with their ignition repair needs. Unfortunately, since it is mechanical, there is bound to be issues from time-to-time. If you haven’t experienced a problem then you should consider yourself fortunate.

When you are having trouble getting your key in the ignition or getting it out of the ignition, the last thing to do is panic. In our experience, when someone panics, they often over-react. They will usually snatch the key out of the ignition causing the problem to become worse than it is. We suggest that you rely on a locksmith to take care of the problem for you instead.

Just because your key looks ok doesn’t mean it’s ok. Most motorists don’t notice a problem just by looking at it. They often don’t realize that there is something wrong until they experience a problem. The key might have a small imperfection. This small imperfection can cause it to become jammed in the ignition. This is not something that we are unfamiliar with, as it is rather common. There are some things that you can do, instead of over-reacting to the problem.

Here are some of the things that you can do:

When the car is ON do this:

  • Check the Gear
  • Make sure the vehicle is in the PARK position. If it is not then the key will not turn.
  • Try Loosening the Key Up

If you just wiggle the key within the ignition, it should loosen it up to the point where it will easily slide out. You shouldn’t apply to much pressure because this could damage the key and the ignition.

When the car is OFF do this:

Exam Your Battery

If you were to rely on a locksmith, the first thing we would do when we arrive is to check the battery. When there is a dead battery it is often due to a problem with the battery being dead. We hope that a dead battery is the only problem because if it is then this is an easy fix for us. There is a reason why the key will not turn in the ignition when you have a dead battery; it helps prevent auto theft.

Loosening Up Your Key

Loosen up your key by gently wiggling it back and forth in the ignition. You don’t want to apply too much force or else it could prevent the key from coming out.

Evaluate the Key Position

You may put your key in the ignition incorrectly. This is another thing that could present a problem. Check to make sure your key is fully inserted in the right position so that it will come out correctly.

The reason that these suggestions have been offered is because these are the things that have worked for motorists before. If you have ever had a cylinder problem before and they used a different method for dealing with the issue, you can try this too. If you have experienced this for the first time, then we would highly suggest that you try the aforementioned. We have offered these same suggestions to other motorists and they have proven successful. Which means that we have no doubt that they will also prove effective for you.

You certainly wouldn’t want to do anything that could cause you to strip the cylinder ignition. If this does happen then you might have to have your cylinder replaced. Keep calm and let a qualified locksmith take care of the situation for you. You can avoid the costly expenses associated with a stripped cylinder by making sure you receive the services of a qualified locksmith who can successfully assist with your cylinder problem needs.

Relying on An Effective Locksmith

The absolute best way for you to find an effective locksmith is by choosing a reputable locksmith service. Many who live in and around you will likely be happy to recommend an effective locksmith. However, if they are unable to do so then you will likely need to go online to consult some of the review websites. There are plenty of websites that will allow consumers to discuss their experience with a service provider. If you are looking for a reputable locksmith then you should choose one that has favorable reviews. You’ll also need to look for one that offers you the type of service that is most important to you, such as quick service, affordable services, convenient services, etc. Read between the lines because what you are attempting to establish is a picture of the type of services you can expect to receive from the locksmith that you choose.

You definitely wouldn’t want to rely on just any locksmith. Some locksmiths are recommended by mechanics because they are given money in exchange for those who call on them. This doesn’t mean that they are the most reputable or reliable locksmiths to deal with ignition cylinder issues. This is why you have to take things a step further by doing your own research in your efforts to find the most reputable locksmith possible.
